Simplicity and monotony are pre-requisites for a successful patriotic chant. That and whether hoards of inebriated sports-fans can juggle a beer in one hand, a pie in the other, and remember the words simultaneously. If they can, you’ve got a real chant on your hands.
The Yanks don’t win any points on complexity or melody, but simply chanting U.S.A over and over certainly leaves you in no confusion as to who they’re rooting for.
The Kiwi’s have the haka; intimidating, but you’re limited as to where you can perform such an elaborate dance – despite drunk Kiwi males continually removing their shirts to perform a haka in every tube, public square and pub they come in contact with, even when they only ‘win’ Bronze.
The Poms have the Barmy Army; they’re efficient in what they do. Loud, intensely passionate, and they have this blurred reality that just because they invented something, they’re still good at it. Bless.
I guess the difference is, Australia generally win lots of medals (mostly Gold). And that means that Aussie, Aussie, Aussie; Oi, Oi, Oi is probably the pick of the bunch.
